Gabe Migala, Master of Human Resources candidate
Why did you choose the MHR program at the Moore School?
As I searched for the right graduate program for me, I was awestruck by both the companies
who recruit from South Carolina as well as the remarkable reputation of the faculty.
Once I first spoke with Sally Fulkert about what the MHR program had to offer, I was
sure it was the right fit for me. The beautiful South Carolina weather didn’t hurt
either!
What has been the most influential thing you've learned through your program?
I believe learning to have the ability to adapt to many different sets of circumstances
or working environments has been the most important lesson so far throughout my time
in the MHR program. Once you’re sitting at your desk during your internship, chipping
away at one of the 18 projects you’ve been handed, you’re much better off having gone
through a curriculum that challenges you and encourages you to wear many different
hats.
Where and with what company was your internship?
Atlanta, Georgia, with Honeywell
What were you doing day-to-day?
Working in a primarily project management-based role, I usually allotted time to work
on many different projects enabling various strategic initiatives throughout each
day. I set aside most of my mornings for tasks that may have required collaboration
with employees outside the U.S., while my afternoons were often filled with calls
regarding my intern team’s corporate project.
What is the most important thing you learned?
Having worked on projects that were global in scope with project sponsors based all
around the world, learning the ins and outs of contributing to a truly global organization
is something I’ve valued immensely. While I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity
to travel to Europe for a face-to-face meeting with my manager’s global team, it did
not come without my fair share of 5:30 a.m. calls with European colleagues.
Would you recommend this internship/company to other MHR students?
I would definitely recommend an internship with Honeywell to other MHR students. No
matter what I was working on this summer, it always felt like something that would
genuinely affect the company’s performance in a positive, impactful way. Honeywell
truly strives to empower its HR employees.
Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years?
After graduating from the MHR program in December, I'd like to eventually be managing
HR for an entire business division, hopefully after having worked internationally
for some of those years!
