Program Overview
Through a rigorous application and interview process, up to two of the finest Honors College international business students will be chosen to spend a fifth year at the University of Oxford-Lady Margaret Hall College. While studying at Oxford, they will be immersed in the tutorial system, a highly challenging and intellectually empowering educational tool.
Lady Margaret Hall College
The University of Oxford is composed of 38 self-governing interdisciplinary colleges where students live, eat and study. Lady Margaret Hall College (LMH), founded in 1878, is known for its progressive spirit, its commitment to the highest standards of teaching and research, and its openness to intellectual change. IB-Oxford Scholars will live in LMH College with other undergraduate students and have the opportunity to take advantage of all LMH College and University of Oxford resources. Each IB-Oxford Scholar is assigned a personal tutor in their area, who is located at LMH and helps the student to organize a program of study. Like other Oxford undergraduates, IB-Oxford Scholars are taught in tutorials or small groups (typically one to three students) by Oxford tutors. This system of learning involves an intense interaction between the student and their tutor. The tutorial system in most subjects demands a great deal of individual reading and regular essay writing as well as frequent interaction with tutors. To further their understanding of the subject, students typically complement their tutorials by attending lectures or classes taught by world-renown experts.
The Oxford Scholar
Students who apply to the IB-Oxford program are ones who are intellectually curious and highly self-motivated. Following their four-year undergraduate curriculum at UofSC, students will attend the Michelmas (October to December), Hilary (January to March) and Trinity (April to June) terms at Oxford. This fifth year of undergraduate study at Oxford will allow you to deepen your knowledge in areas that may be related to business and are highly interesting to you but which, because of curriculum requirements at UofSC, you were not able to fully explore. For example, to deepen your understanding of the full context of international business environments, you might take a tutorial in The European Union and British Politics, Imperial and Global History 1750-1914, or Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Past IB-Oxford scholars have stated that their experiences in the program have proven to be excellent preparation both for graduate school and professional careers.
