Moore School leadership certificate program kicks off classes

October 4, 2016

The new Certificate in Leadership Excellence program, presented by the Darla Moore School of Business’ Executive Development division, launched this month with one of its three core courses, Translating Strategy into Results. This course, accompanied by the other two core courses and two electives, completes the certificate requirements and is designed to bolster the leadership skills of professionals in middle management positions in smaller companies.

The three core courses — Translating Strategy into Results, Being an Effective Leader and Leading Change — are taken by all participants seeking to complete the certificate.

“These three courses have a nice story arc around understanding where you’re going, figuring out who you are as a leader and then implementing change in the organization,” said Associate Dean for Executive Development Tim Carroll.

The first course shows participants how to identify key areas for improvement and design strategies to best enhance customer relations, financial performance and other business operations. The second uses the Six Domains of Leadership Model to analyze personal leadership skills and potential. The third looks at how each individual leader functions within his or her organization to effect change.

Together, with two of the four elective courses offered, these courses allow most participants to complete the program in nine to 18 months.

“Everybody needs to understand leadership,” Carroll said. “These courses can fit very well within any organization.”

With this program, participants don’t have to be away from the office too much because of the focus on application. For each course, participants are in the classroom for two days and complete the course with one day’s worth of out-of-class work. Each participant is given an iPad containing the course content and other materials in order to ensure their success.

An added benefit of the small-class structure is the networking opportunities it gives participants. They are connected with other leaders in the area and have the benefit of learning from each other as they go through the program.

“People can hear what other organizations are going through, what they’re struggling with and what works for them,” Carroll said.

Translating Strategy into Results began Oct. 4. There is an alumni discount available. For more information about scheduling and pricing, visit LearnMoore.com.
