Award-winning photographer Kevin Jairaj visits School of Journalism and Mass Communications

World-renowned photographer Kevin Jairaj visited the SJMC as part of the Canon Explorers of Light program. Jairaj, known for his exceptional work in sports and portrait photography, led a series of immersive workshops, lectures, and portfolio reviews that promise to leave a lasting impact on visual communications students.

“We are thrilled to have a photographer of his caliber engaging with our students,” said SJMC Director Damion Waymer. “Our students will benefit immensely from the hands-on lighting workshops and portfolio reviews he will provide. And none of this would be possible without the support of Canon and their sponsorship through the Canon Explorers of Light program. For that, we are truly grateful.”

Jairaj’s visit included four studio lighting sessions with multiple light setups designed for 80 visual communications students, an on-location lighting workshop for 40 students, and two large lecture presentations focusing on his career path in sports photography and life as a freelance photographer. Additionally, he hosted portfolio reviews with 20 seniors and participated in a Q&A session open to all students.

In conjunction with Jairaj’s visit, Canon representative Lisa Gualtieri Alford led a demonstration for videography students, showcasing the newly acquired Canon R6 Mark II cameras. She also held a workshop on selecting a first camera and displayed Canon’s latest gear during an atrium pizza lunch event, offering students the opportunity to test out the cutting-edge equipment.

A group of students from Benedict College visited campus to participate in this event.

This collaboration between USC and Canon highlights the importance of hands-on experience and industry engagement in shaping the next generation of visual storytellers.
