User Experience and Design Minor

The User Experience and Design minor equips students with skills to enhance the design and development of information systems and measure the usability of products and applications effectively. The UX minor centers on four primary areas of expertise: user-centered design, user-needs research, visual and writing communication, and front-end development.

Any student enrolled at the University of South Carolina may choose this minor.

Curriculum

Required Courses (6 Hours)

  • ISCI 259 - User Experience Research Methods and Tools 
    User behavior and priorities; gather, analyze, and communicate key insights to develop effective products and services.
  • ISCI 249/JOUR 249 - Principles of User Experience and Design (UX/UI) 
    An exploration of theoretical and practical foundations of user-centered design from both the design and research perspectives.

Electives (12 Hours)

Select 12 hours from the following, or other electives as approved by the School of Information Science:

  • ISCI 250  - Information Design 
    Overview of responsive website design, development, and basic content management systems. Examine the current tools and standards and learn how they function together in a modern web environment. Emphasis on the myriad of viewing devices and specific reference to the unique needs of information intensive institutions.
  • ISCI 430 - User-Centered Information Architecture 
    Processes and techniques for designing user-centered information systems on the Web. Issues of needs analysis, content development, cognitive models, human-computer interaction, interface design, and usability testing.
  • ISCI 496 - Internship in Information Science
    Supervised field experience in an information agency relevant to students’ professional goals. Internship must be approved as UX focused.
  • ISCI 560 - Data Visualization 
    Foster theoretical insights about data visualization. Prepare temporal, geospatial, and textual data for visual representations. In hands-on sessions, students practice data visualization techniques and apply them in a wide range of real-world scenarios.
  • JOUR 203 - Principles of Visual Communications 
    Theory and history of visual communication in the mass media emphasizing informational and persuasive messages created by graphic, photographic, and multimedia processes.
