Call for Code: IBM watsonx workshop

Are you a college student in South Carolina?

If so, we challenge you to improve your knowledge of generative AI and compete for prizes. All majors are welcome. The USC College of Information and Communications has teamed up with IBM to bring you a one-of-a-kind experience. You will learn how to use IBM’s watsonx software and apply that knowledge to solving a challenge question revealed after the workshop.

As part of this Call for Code at IBM experience, you will be introduced to the Call for Code campus program and the Global Challenge. You will have an opportunity to  grow your AI skills, access new free watsonx courses from IBM to propel your career goals and compete for prizes by turning your bright ideas into practical and impactful solutions to help local communities!

FAQs

Who can participate?
Undergraduate and graduate students from any college or university in South Carolina may participate. All majors and academic disciplines are welcome.

How to get involved:
Register using your college/university email.

How are teams formed?
IBM staff will form the teams using a program that will randomly assign registrants to one of 20 teams. There will be 10 individuals per team. The teams will be a mix of students from different institutions to the extent possible.

What’s involved in the competition?
After completing the watsonx workshop, student teams will be given a challenge question to answer. Once teams have researched the topic and decided on a potential solution, using generative AI, they will put together a proposal for the judges to consider.

Workshop solutions are required to make use of one or more IBM watsonx product, including, but not limited to:

  • watsonx.ai
  • watsonx Assistant
  • watsonx Governance
  • Participants will have access to watsonx training and resources.
  • Submissions may also optionally use additional IBM Cloud services or other IBM technologies.

What’s the schedule for the day?

9 a.m. - Welcome and introductions

9:30 a.m. - IBM watsonx demonstration

10 a.m. - Developing a real-world solution using watsonx for the 2024 Call for Code global challenge theme

11:30 a.m. - Lunch and judges confer

12:30 p.m. - Announce winners and next steps

Who will be on the review panel?
The review panel will be made up of professionals representing the university, local business, government and a social media influencer.

Are there prizes for the competition?
Yes! There are prizes for the top three teams that will be divided evenly among team members. (Processing prizes may take several weeks after the event.)

First Place - $10,000 

Second Place - $5,000
