College of Information and Communications

Journalism

Do you want to make the world a better place, write beautiful stories and master the digital world? Do you like exposing wrongdoing and giving people the information they need in a democracy? Would you like to follow in the footsteps of our alums covering Washington, Wall Street and pro sports? Then start here. We'll equip you to ask those tough questions, pry out that information and thrive in a multimedia world by being confident, fast — and factual.

Careers

Our highly sought-after graduates work at the Washington Post, ESPN, Good Morning America and other news organizations in major markets throughout the country. They cover governors and presidents, big business, pro sports, celebrities and everything in between, all of which is integral to the communities they reach. Some win Pulitzer Prizes. Others go viral. All are part of a strong alumni network that grows each year.

Classes

You'll learn how to tell stories across different media, write beautiful profiles and effective tweets, create useful infographics, use data to find more compelling stories, and edit on deadline. Your classes will prepare you to communicate clearly in the digital media landscape, whatever slice of it you choose to master. Learn more about the classes you will take as a journalism student in the university's academic bulletin.

Capstone Experience

Seniors cap off their college days in a state-of-the-art multimedia newsroom and produce all parts of a daily news report for our award-winning Carolina News and Reporter website.  If you think it sounds like you'll be working for a local news outlet, you're right. And you'll be covering stories that matter to the people in our community.

Internships

Whether you want to report in a big city or in a small town, we help you find the place that’s right for you. Our students have been placed in internships with the likes of CNN, the Charlotte Business Journal, Stars and Stripes, The Today Show and with media outlets in their South Carolina home towns. It's all about learning new moves, and we're all about helping you get there. And these are just some of the many opportunities for our students.

Advanced Study

You can use your journalism major as a solid foundation for graduate study.  Further your writing and reporting skills and gain a deeper understanding for the application of communication techniques with graduate-level courses through our accelerated master's plan.  Select from strategic communications management or multimedia journalism, and you can complete two degrees in as little as five years.

Faculty

You’ll study with professors who’ve covered politics, general news, sports and business at media outlets throughout the country including NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox affiliates, the Greenville News, United Press International, Knight-Ridder and The Wall Street Journal. These faculty members draw on years of experience in the field to guide your development as a reporter, writer, editor and producer. Meet some of these amazing faculty »
