A delegation from the University of South Carolina (USC), led by Dean Tom Reichert, visited National Chengchi University in Taiwan on Dec. 9 and 10, 2024. The visit aimed to strengthen existing collaborations with NCCU’s College of Communication and explore new partnerships with the Global Communication and Innovation Technology program and the Graduate Institute of Library, Information, and Archival Studies.
Strengthening Ties with the College of Communication
During the visit to NCCU’s College of Communication, Reichert introduced USC’s College of Information and Communications, emphasizing its focus on emerging technologies. Jih-Hsuan Tammy Lin, director of the International Master's Program in International Communication Studies, provided an overview of NCCU’s college and its programs. Discussions centered on enhancing the dual-degree master’s program already in place and identifying opportunities for further collaboration.
The USC delegation also toured NCCU’s XR Hub, a facility established in 2023 in collaboration with Meta. The hub’s cutting-edge technology in virtual, augmented, and extended reality sparked discussions on potential joint initiatives in immersive communication technologies.
Reichert delivered a keynote speech to a graduate class, highlighting the transformative role of artificial intelligence in communication education. He emphasized the need to equip students with skills for an AI-augmented workforce in the evolving communication field.
Linwan Wu, USC’s representative for the dual-degree master’s program, presented details about the program to NCCU students. Attendees expressed enthusiasm, raising questions about academic life in Columbia, South Carolina, and program specifics.
Exploring Opportunities with GCIT
At NCCU’s GCIT program, the USC delegation was warmly received by Director Trisha Lin, faculty, and students. Lin provided an overview of the program, followed by presentations from GCIT students on their academic experiences. Reichert introduced USC’s CIC and discussed prospective collaborative initiatives. The visit included a tour of GCIT’s facilities, further solidifying the foundation for future partnerships.
Collaboration with Library and Information Studies
In addition to their engagements with communication programs, Associate Professor Feili Tu-Keefner, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Kim Thompson, and Wu visited the Graduate Institute of Library, Information, and Archival Studies. The team attended a presentation on the Research Center for Chinese Cultural Metaverse, which showcased NCCU’s innovative projects. Both parties explored potential research collaborations in information sciences and cultural studies.

The visit marked a significant step in enhancing the academic and cultural ties between USC and NCCU. Both institutions expressed optimism about the possibilities for future collaborations, leveraging their shared commitment to innovation and global engagement.
