Master of Arts

If you’re looking for a career in research in the communications industry or in academia, take a look at our Master of Arts degree. It’s a traditional 30-credit-hour academic program that includes a six-credit-hour thesis.

Degree Requirements

The Master of Arts requires 30 credit hours of coursework, including three three-credit-hour core courses, five graduate-level elective courses, and a six-credit-hour thesis. The thesis is designed to demonstrate that the student is capable of conducting independent research under the supervision of a faculty committee.

With the approval of the faculty advisor, some or all of the elective courses may be taken outside of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

To complete the M.A. degree, the student must complete the following:

1.  30 graduate credit hours*.

a.  The M.A. core (nine credit hours)

    • Research Methods in Mass Communication
    • Communication Theory
    • Literature of Mass Communication

b.  An additional 15 credit hours of approved graduate-level courses.

c.  Thesis Preparation, which includes a thesis proposal, the thesis, and an oral defense (six credit hours).

2. A comprehensive examination (a five-hour written exam based on coursework).

*At least 15 credit hours must be 700-level or above courses excluding Thesis Preparation.
