Background

Sjoerd Beugelsdijk holds the J. Willis Cantey Chair and is professor in international business and economics at the Darla Moore School of Business of the University of South Carolina. He is an expert on economic (de-)globalization and cultural and institutional differences. Beugelsdijk has held visiting positions at several universities including Copenhagen Business School, Bocconi University, and KU-Leuven, and holds an honorary chair in international business at the University of Groningen. Before his professorship at the University of South Carolina, Beugelsdijk worked at the University of Groningen (2009-2023) and Nijmegen University (2006-2009). He has served as a head of department, director of research, and academic director of the undergraduate international business program. 

Research

Beugelsdijk has published many refereed articles in journals such as the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Studies, Organization Science, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, and Regional Studies and Journal of Economic Geography, several books (MIT Press and Cambridge University Press) including one textbook on international economics and business, and made many contributions to edited volumes. 

Beugelsdijk received over one million euros in competitive research grants (Rubicon, Veni, Vidi) of the Netherlands and Flemish Organisation for Scientific Research. He has supervised ten Ph.D. projects and is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of International Business Studies. He was elected Fellow of the Academy of International Business (AIB) in 2020, was awarded the silver medal in 2019 by the AIB for his contribution to the field of international business, and received recognition as an excellent teacher in three different universities. In 2023, he was elected member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW).

Beugelsdijk aims for research with real world impact, for example as reflected in the revision of the UN World Investment Report, and his coordination and co-authoring of the 2019 government advisory board (Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau) report on ‘Dutch national identity’. He published 5 books, including the popular scientific book ‘De Verdeelde Nederlanden’ (2021) on polarization in the Netherlands. The book was extensively covered in Dutch newspapers, radio and tv and received five-star reviews (Volkskrant and Dagblad van het Noorden). He has been consulted by the European Committee, the Dutch government (local and national), political parties, business associations, national police, NGOs and non-profit organizations.

Beugelsdijk is included on the list of most impactful researchers worldwide compiled by Stanford University – based on citations to his work. Several of his published articles belong to the top one percent of highly cited in business and economics according to Web of Science.
