University of South Carolina students, including many from the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, swept the student awards at the American Advertising Federation of the Midlands’ annual gala on Feb. 16.
Fourteen awards were presented to students, including two Special Judges’ Awards, five Gold Student ADDY Awards and eight Silver Student ADDY Awards. In addition to the group awards earned by Garnet & Black magazine and CreateAthon at USC, several advertising and visual communications students also won individual awards.
“This was one of the best showings in recent memory for J-school students,” said Associate Professor Van Kornegay, head of the SJMC’s visual communications sequence. “Not only do our students have creative ideas, but they’re also skilled at executing those ideas in ways that separate them from the competition.”
Gold winners will advance to regional competitions; those who place there will advance to the national level.
“Awards are domain validation for the creative services departments at ad agencies,” said Jeffrey Williams, an instructor in the J-school’s advertising sequence. “The students winning these awards have worked tirelessly to make their work competitive. As a professor, it’s rewarding to see them have their first taste of success in this exciting industry.”
