Arnold School of Public Health Ambassadors | ASPH Ambassadors aid in the recruitment process for prospective students and their families. Carolina Experience Workshop | Students engage in-depth on a topic of interest, in a small group setting, facilitated by a trained presenter. CEC Advising | With highly trained College of Engineering and Computing staff members devoted solely to the advising needs of our students and further support from faculty, there is always someone available to help those in need of academic guidance. Academic advisors work closely with all undergraduate students to make sure that their experience in our college starts strong from the very first day of classes. CEC Summer Start Scholars and First Generation Scholars Program | Each College of Engineering and Computing Summer Start Scholar accepted in the First-Generation Scholars cohort begins their academic career with a 3-week residential summer camp. This camp includes a 3-credit hour course which is paid for, along with all other summer tuition and fees, by our generous CEC alumni. Then each fall and spring semester, eligible Scholars receive a $500 scholarship over the next 4 years. | Campus Involvement, Educational Support |
CEC Tutoring | The College of Engineering and Computing, in partnership with the Student Success Center, offers free drop-in tutoring in Swearingen, Room 1A07 (near the Main Street entrance). Help will be available for math, science and other introductory-level courses. Tutoring hours are posted each semester by course. Columbia National Black Law Students Association Pre-Law Chapter | The National Black Law Students Association at the national level was formed to articulate and promote the needs and goals of Black law students to effectuate change in the legal community. As a chapter, the Pre-Law NBLSA at USC seeks to cultivate a community for students interested in a law career with networking opportunities, community service, LSAT information, and mentorship. The chapter seeks to uplift members through common goals, distinction, and outreach in order to diversify the legal community.

Cultural Discussions and Engagement | The Writing Center's social media is used to share Writing Center events, but it is also a tool through which authors and voices are uplifted. Book and media recommendations, tutor shoutouts, and writing advice are shared on socials in an attempt to meet students where they are. Further, the Writing Center uses social media in tandem with their own unique events and on-campus collaboration to celebrate marginalized communities and the days/weeks/months that recognize them (i.e. National Coming Out Day, Black History Month, etc). | Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Educational Support |
D.E.F.I.N.E. | Since 2007, D.E.F.I.N.E.'s sole purpose was to allow members of the community to serve as role models and provide mentoring, academic support and higher educational opportunities for females enrolled at the University of South Carolina Lancaster. With guidance and mentorship form community leaders, members of the D.E.F.I.N.E. organization have provided community service through various youth group organizations. Drop-in Tutoring | Students seeking assistance with study skills or content in a specific course work with a Peer Tutor who was successful in the same course. Students meet with a Peer Tutor individually or as part of a group, for as long as two hours, as needed. | Educational Support |
Exploratory Advising / Major Change | Change happens - and it's OK! If you're thinking about switching your major, talk one-on-one with an advisor to explore other academic programs, learn about the process of changing your major and look at how your completed classes would apply to a new major. | Educational Support |
First Generation Students in the Engineering and Computing College | The CECFG aims to provide a support system for first generation college students enrolled in the College of Engineering and Computing as well as to help serve the community. Our goal is to help incoming students acclimate to their new environment as well as providing opportunities to give back to the community.

For the Brothers Retreat | The Brother2Brother retreat, a component of the Black Men's Initiative (B2B), is a three-day retreat aimed to connect Black men across the campus in an effort to facilitate personal, professional, and academic growth. Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, and Chefchaouen, Morocco Program Dates: 5/8/24-5/20/24 Course Description: This course examines business, society, and culture in the dynamic setting of Morocco in North Africa. Experience local culture and language while gaining a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities faced by industries and businesses in the cities of Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier and Chefchaouen. Ink! Undergraduate English Association | Ink! Undergraduate English Association is an organization that develops students academically and professionally in the areas of literature and writing, and fosters a sense of community among members. Multicultural Assistant Peer Program Participants | The Multicultural Assistance Peer Program (MAPP) is designed to assist first-year multicultural students transitioning to the university by providing them with a trained mentor for their critical first year. Mutual Expectations Workshop | Students engage with peers and faculty, over lunch, to discuss issues and have an open dialogue through a guided conversation in a relaxed setting. One-on-One Tutoring | This is the main engagement offered by the Writing Center. Any student or staff member at the University can meet with a trained tutor to workshop their writing. All subjects, genres, and disciplines can be brought in, and writers can be at any stage in the writing process. Tutors will not only assist in the writing process but help clients develop tools to grow their own writing skills outside the center. Orientation to National Fellowships | For freshmen and those new to national fellowships. Peer Writing & Communications Drop-in Tutoring | Students engage in one-on-one or small group writing and communications tutoring on a drop-in basis with a Tutor who is trained in both verbal and written communication strategies. Peer Writing Session | Whether you're stumped at the start or need a final reader, turn to a student expert for free writing and communications support. Student Success Center University 101 Campus Partner Presentation | UNIV 101 students attend an (in-person) SSC presentation on a topic identified by their course instructor. The College of Engineering and Computing's Diversity Gala | Date: Thursday, April 11, 2024
5:00 pm-6:00 pm: Networking Hour 6:00 pm-9:00 pm: Diversity Gala Location: Russell House Ballroom The CEC Diversity Gala is a collaborative initiative involving minority representation clubs at USC, including the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, National Society of Black Engineers, Women in Computing, Theta Tau, and other on-campus professional organizations. The primary goal of this event is to encourage professional networking and champion diversity within the CEC. The gala promises an evening filled with inspiring keynote speakers, opportunities for each student organization to introduce their chapter, and a dinner. Workshops and Presentations | Workshops and presentations make up the majority of Writing Center events and are frequently aimed toward First Year English (FYE) students (students enrolled in English 101 or 102). The events are usually either presentations (for example, students can learn about starting a paper or revising an argument), or workshops (for example, students can learn about thesis statements and get a chance to actually write them). Workshops and presentations not aimed at FYE students are also offered and may be aimed to undergraduates in general, to graduate students, or to a general audience. Alternatively, they may be aimed based on genre of work, such as journal articles or creative writing. | Educational Support |
Write-Ins | A few times per semester, the Writing Center will host write-ins with the intent to provide a place of support and accountability for all writers. Write-ins can be aimed to various audiences, such as FYE students working on final papers, graduate students working on professional writing, or faculty working on publishing materials. These events start with goal-setting, and then everyone writes together quietly before coming back together at the end to share and celebrate goals. | Educational Support |
