Ronald T. and Gayla D. Farrar Award in Media & Civil Rights History

The Ronald T. and Gayla D. Farrar Award in Media & Civil Rights History, given biennially, recognizes the best journal article or chapter in an edited collection on the historical relationship between the media and civil rights published during the previous two years.

About the Farrar Award

The Farrar Award is presented in honor of Ronald T. and Gayla D. Farrar.

Farrar was a historian who served as a professor and interim dean in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. His journalistic career included working as a reporter for the Arkansas Democrat in Little Rock during the Civil Rights Movement. His wife, Gayla, an English teacher, helped him support international students in the J-School, especially during holidays away from home.

Recipients of the award receive a plaque and a $1,000 prize.

The winning scholarship will be presented in a featured address at the  2025 Media & Civil Rights History Symposium on Friday, March 28, 2025, held at the University of  South Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
