Best Practices for Legal Education

Roy T. Stuckey

Professor Stuckey served as a member of the faculty from 1973 until his retirement in 2008. Since his retirement, he has remained an active scholar in his two areas of expertise: South Carolina family law and legal education. He is the author of Marital Litigation in South Carolina: Substantive Law, Third Edition (SC Bar — CLE Division 2010) (with supplements). He also continues to write and speak, as a nationally and internationally recognized expert, about education for the practice of law. In addition to family law, his books and numerous articles explore issues regarding professionalism and professional skills and values. From 1999 to 2003, Professor Stuckey served as the initial Director of the Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough Center on Professionalism, during which time he developed the professionalism website for lawyers and judges, a USC Law School-based clearinghouse of information and research pertaining to the character, competence, and conduct of legal professionals.

Throughout his career, Professor Stuckey has actively served a variety of professional organizations. Some of his most recent service activities are described here. Please consult his curriculum vitae for a more complete listing. He is a member of the Board of Editors of the International Journal of Clinical Legal Education (England). In 2006, he provided expert assistance to ABA/CEELI in the development of the Legal Education Reform Index, a tool for evaluating the quality of legal education in Central Europe and Eurasia. That same year, he was the keynote speaker at conferences on legal education in Japan and England. In addition, he has served on approximately 15 accreditation site inspection teams for the American Bar Association, and, from 2004–07, he was a member of the University's Tenure and Promotion Committee. From 2001–2007, Professor Stuckey chaired the Steering Committee for the Best Practices Project of the Clinical Legal Education Association. This resulted in the 2007 publication of Roy Stuckey et al., Best Practices for Legal Education. A copy of the book can be obtained while supplies last from Professor Stuckey at or University of South Carolina School of Law, Columbia, SC 29208. A blog for the book is available at
