Living in Columbia

One of the largest cities in South Carolina, Columbia is still small enough to feel like home.

Be in the center of the action

For students interested in government, there's no better place. We are one of a handful of flagship law schools located in the state capital, which makes it easy to find externships and summer positions at the State House. Many federal, state, and municipal courts, including the South Carolina Supreme Court, are also here in Columbia.

Enjoy our vibrant culture

The Midlands is home to 130 cultural organizations, including 16 dance companies, 12 theatre groups, and the South Carolina Philharmonic. The nationally renowned Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon, and foodies are in for a treat—many restaurants around the city specialize in fresh, local southern fare, but you'll also find delicious cuisine from around the world.

Explore the outdoors

Mild winters—with average temperatures in the 50s—and warm summers mean there's never a bad time to explore the outdoors in South Carolina. Columbia is located at the intersection of three rivers, and the gentle current is perfect for kayaking. If you prefer hiking, the Congaree National Park and Harbison State Forest are in your backyard.
