College of Education at the Literacy Research Association

The College of Education was well-represented at the Literacy Research Association Conference in Atlanta, Ga. Learn more about the sessions featuring our leadership, faculty and students:

Professors Yang Wang, Lenny Sanchez, Eurydice Bauer, Lucy Spence, Julia López-Robertson, Eliza Braden and Catherine Compton-Lilly presented on areas of expertise including multilingual literacy education, bilingual teaching, challenging literacy practices, and literacies and identities.

Professor Fenice Boyd chaired the conference and currently serves as the president of the Literacy Research Association. She served on a panel with Dean Thomas Hodges featuring education administrators.

More than 10 current and former graduate students presented at the conference on topics including multilingual identity development, reading multicultural literature, outdoor writing for teens, language explorations and disciplinary literacies.

Participating students included Shuang Du, Jing Zhang, Blessing Chidiebere Emodi, Anthonia Onajite Anwhinawhi, Celina-Maria Espinosa, Ghanem Alghuwainem, Tempestt S. Johnson, Kyungjin Hwang, Ling Hao, Natalya Stepanova, Lydia Carnesale, Shalondra Griggs, Marsha Frett and Shazia Hamid.

Ph.D. students from Language and Literacy were awarded the Inaugural Graduate Special Session. These students were the only students with an awarded proposal.

In addition to our excellent representation, Professor Catherine Compton Lilly was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame. The college will highlight this spectacular achievement in an upcoming article.

Also notable was a special research partnership between practitioners in South Carolina and in Wyoming. These educators compared research and came up with new ways to analyze literacy data for their communities. More to come on this story as well. Participants included Tammer Gary, Brad Washington, Tiffany Palmatier, Beth White, Alyssa Powers and Lenny Sánchez.
