Expanding first-generation student success through partnership with NASPA

The University of South Carolina has increased its collaboration with the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators to enhance support for first-generation students. As part of this initiative, USC has joined the NASPA First Scholars program, which will involve working alongside NASPA to identify and implement evidence-based changes to our existing processes and policies.

USC belongs to First Scholars cohort 5, which includes Florida State University, Texas Tech University, Texas State University, and the University of Wisconsin-Greenbay, among others. Sixty-five schools in total are participating in the First Scholars phase of the Network, although USC is the only public institution from South Carolina currently represented. Furman University and Presbyterian College are two past cohort members from the state.

This initiative to support first-generation students has the full backing of USC leadership, with key figures including President Amiridis, Provost Arnett, and VP Rex Tolliver. The work done through the First Scholars Program will build on USC’s previous involvement in the NASPA First Gen Forward Program. Ultimately, these efforts aim to improve retention and graduation rates for all students.

What this will offer:

  • Enhanced support for first-generation students, leading to improved retention and graduation rates.
  • More efficient and effective use of resources through data-driven decision-making.
  • A more inclusive and welcoming campus environment for all students.

Next steps:

  • Conduct a thorough assessment of USC's current support systems for first-generation students.
  • Collaborate with NASPA to identify areas for improvement.
  • Develop and implement a plan for systemic change based on evidence and best practices.
  • Regularly monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of our efforts.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
