Garnet Bites

This program offers a solution that keeps food from the landfill and feeds students, faculty and staff for free, thanks to a collaborative effort between the Office of the Provost, the Department of Information Technology, Gamecock CommUnity Shop, the Office of Sustainability, Student Life and Carolina Food Co.

What it is

Garnet Bites is a web-based platform designed to provides convenient and immediate notifications of available food on campus after a catered event. Faculty, staff and students are all welcome to join the list to be notified and help reduce food waste on campus.

With hundreds of catered events taking place across campus every year, a formal process for distributing food after the event concludes will significantly decrease the university’s environmental impact. It will also streamline the question of leftovers for event planners hosting green-certified events.

How to participate

Anyone who helps organize events involving food, from small meetings to large celebrations, can learn how to use this campus-wide food recovery notification system.

Event Planner Training

For USC community members who are planning a catered event, the Garnet Bites team hosts training on how to register your event to participate in the program.

Currently, three trainings will be available:

  • February 25 from 4-4:30 p.m.
  • March 5 from 2:30-3 p.m.
  • March 18 from 10-10:30 a.m.

Sign up for a session online, which will be virtual via Microsoft Teams.
