For the 28th year, volunteer law students at the University of South Carolina School of Law will provide free tax assistance to the low income and elderly community. Tax return preparation will be conducted at the law school on Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., starting on February 13 and ending on March 27.
Volunteers will prepare and e-file simple 2020 South Carolina state and federal returns. No business, self-employment, foreign student returns or complicated forms can be completed at this site.
Due to COVID-19 the process will be different in 2021. A limited number of people will be allowed in the building at a time. The only in-person portion of the process will be the intake/interview, which will include copying client documents. The actual state and federal returns will be prepared, reviewed and e-filed virtually by a certified preparer and a copy of the completed return mailed to the client.
Individuals seeking to have their taxes prepared must present:
- A valid photo ID
- A social security card for the filer and any dependents
- All related tax documents
The entrance to the School of Law is at 1525 Senate Street. No appointments; first come, first served basis.
