About the Program
Many power wheelchair drivers face a variety of issues related to their independence,
safety, efficiency, and accessibility because of impaired motor control, visual deficits,
impaired reaction time, inattention, and various other deficits that are common among
wheeled mobility users. The continuum of currently available SMART technologies will
be discussed that can be incorporated into the power wheelchair to address these issues
and improve driver safety, confidence, and independence.
Target Audience: This program is designed for Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapist Assistants,
Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Assistive Technology Professionals,
and Equipment Suppliers/Providers.
Course Objectives: Define SMART technologies in the context of power wheelchairs.
- List three goals of power wheelchair SMART technologies.
- Describe three clinical applications of power wheelchair SMART technologies.
- List 3 research articles supporting the potential need for the incorporation of SMART
technologies into power wheelchairs.
About the Presenter
Lindsey Sharpe, PT, DPT, ATP - LCUI Power Wheelchairs
Lindsey is a graduate of University of North Carolina and earned her Doctor of Physical
Therapy degree from Elon University. She is a member of APTA and RESNA and is both
a licensed Physical Therapist as well as a Certified Assistive Technology Professional.
