Research

Cutting-edge research is at the core of the School of Medicine Columbia's mission. It is also at the core of what our department hopes to accomplish when looking to further advance the quality of orthopedic care for both the state of South Carolina and beyond.

A Message from Our Research Leadership

At the School of Medicine Columbia, we are committed to furthering our understanding of health conditions affecting our patients. We strive to address current issues in orthopedics through clinical research, with the goal of improving the quality of life for the patients we serve and the overall health of our community.

Our faculty and residents are highly focused on identifying causes of common orthopedic conditions and evaluating novel approaches to treatment through investigator-initiated, grant-funded, and industry-sponsored clinical trials.

Current research interests within our department include:

  • Understanding the role of inflammation in the progression of various foot and ankle conditions
  • Exploring the use of nutraceuticals for pain management and inflammation in knee osteoarthritis
  • Evaluating the role of immunonutrition regimens on improved wound healing in diabetic patients
  • Establishing multimodal protocols for post-operative pain management following elective surgeries

Recently, we have integrated the collection of patient-reported outcome measurements into our EMR system, allowing us to collect data for every patient at every clinic visit. This practice provides a wealth of information which can be used to address pressing research questions within the field of orthopedics as well as improve the quality of care that our patients receive.

Finally, we are continuously working to grow our research program through meaningful collaborations, enabling us to produce high quality research. Current collaborations include various departments within Prisma Health, academic partners at the University of South Carolina, academic medical centers, and government entities.

We invite you to explore our recent presentations and publications to learn more about the emphasis on research excellence within our department.

Sincerely,

Benjamin Jackson, MD, MBA
Director of Orthopedic Research
