Shadowing program available for prospective medical students
In June 2019, the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in conjunction with Prisma
Health Richland will once again offer the Finding Your Future shadowing program to
prospective medical students in South Carolina.
Participants are chosen from a select group of individuals, and it is our hope that participants' time spent shadowing will encourage them to attend the USC School of Medicine - Columbia and become a practicing physician.
The program is a four week shadowing experience for competitive rising senior pre-med students selected from several state colleges and universities. Students, who do not already have an acceptance to another medical school and who plan to apply to medical school for entering the 2020 class, are nominated by their pre-med advisors for participation in the program. Finding Your Future provides meaningful “medical experience” which will help support their AMCAS application.
Paramount to the program is the ability to participate in all of the dates for training and shadowing. Also of great importance, is the ability to clearly understand and adhere to the rules and regulations required to "shadow" on the USC/Prisma Health Campus.
Monday through Friday, June 3 – June 28, 2019, students will rotate on a weekly basis among the following clinical areas:
- Family and Preventive Medicine
- Internal Medicine
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Pediatrics
- Psychiatry, and
- Surgery.
Each participant must complete HIPAA security training and other documentation required by the School of Medicine and Palmetto Health prior to beginning the program. Please note that students selected for the program must be able to commit to the entire four weeks without exception. There is no cost to the student for participation, however no college credit is given. Students are also responsible for their own housing.
Contact your pre-med advisor for more information and eligibility. Deadline for accepting students in the program is March 15, 2019.
