School of Medicine Columbia

Education

Educating the next generation of health care providers is at the heart and soul of what we do, from our M.D. clerkships and clinical rotations to our Opthamology Residency program in partnership with Prisma Health, we're constantly educating the best and brightest in our field.

M.D. Students

School of Medicine Columbia M.D. students will be exposed to the field of Opthamology throughout their pre-clerkship curriculum and will have the ability to complete an Opthamology elective rotation during a two-week period during their M-III year or during a one of multiple four-week periods during their M-IV rotations as they are narrowing down a specialty. Further information regarding the M.D. clerkship program can be found on the M.D. Program curriculum page.

Residents

Opthamology Residency

The Prisma Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia Ophthalmology Residency Program has been recognized as one of the top programs in the Southeast for more than two decades. Our commitment to resident experiences and training options are the keys to our success as a residency program. Our graduates have considerable surgical experience and are exposed to a broad range of pathological conditions.

Our mission is to deliver excellent eye care with compassion and commitment for the overall well-being of our patients. We teach our residents primary eye care so they may aspire to prominence with a strong foundation in general ophthalmology. We engage in basic and applied research in order to improve the quality of life for all.

Our program offers rotations in subspecialty clinics, continuity clinics and consultative ophthalmology. Residents work closely in these clinics with full-time faculty supervision and with local community-based ophthalmologists, thereby complementing the educational experience provided by our full-time attendings.

Rotations are structured to provide graduated responsibility at each level of training. Our third-year residents are afforded a great number of ophthalmic surgical procedures, in excess of 200 intraocular cases, to assure competence and confidence in performing various types of ocular surgery.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
