Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a virtual interview day, via Zoom in our AMP application system, with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia. The day begins with introductions from the Office of Admissions and a 45 minute Q&A session with current medical student representatives from our Admissions Ambassadors group. Each applicant will then have two, 30-minute interviews with one member of our Admissions Committee.
Our Admissions Committee is comprised of physicians, administrators, researchers, and MII and MIV medical students. Ample time is also allowed for the applicant to ask questions of the interviewers. Prior to the interview day, applicants are provided with information about what to expect during the admissions process, content and delivery of the curriculum, and financial aid and scholarship information. The interview day begins at 12:30 PM EST and ends at 2:45 PM EST.
There are two primary purposes for the medical school admissions interview:
1. To evaluate the cognitive and non-cognitive qualities of the applicant:
a. Cognitive qualities as measured by the undergraduate, post baccalaureate, and graduate grade point averages (GPA) as measures of academic persistence and competitiveness over time and by the score achieved on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).
b. Non-cognitive qualities, including motivation, maturity, integrity, sensitivity, interpersonal skills, warmth, intellectual curiosity, the ability to withstand stress, medically-related experience, and basis for the decision for a medical career.
2. To recruit competitive applicants to the School of Medicine Columbia.
