Biography

Dr. Bob Price is the retiring Director of the Instrumentation Resource Facility (IRF). He joined the University of South Carolina School of Medicine as Director of the Microscopy Facility in 1990, when it consisted of an early generation confocal microscope, two TEMs, and an SEM. As the director for 34 years, Dr. Price has developed the old microscopy facility into a state-of-the-art biotechnology research core. He previously served as president of the Microscopy Society of America (MSA) and Editor-in-Chief of Microscopy and Microanalysis, the peer reviewed journal of MSA. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Microscopy Today, which is the magazine format publication of MSA. He has received several awards from local and national microscopy societies including the Southeast Microscopy Society Distinguished Scientist Award and the Microscopy Society of America Distinguished Service Award, organized and taught numerous national and international confocal microscopy workshops, and authored or co-authored key microscopy papers and books including “Basic Confocal Microscopy” with Dr Jay Jerome of Vanderbilt University, a book based on the many workshops they have taught together. Dr. Price’s decades-long legacy will continue to live on in the IRF for decades more to come.
