Biography
Dr. Charles Carter joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2005. He serves as the associate dean for graduate medical education, and as the regional GME executive and designated institutional official (DIO) for Prisma Health-Midlands Graduate Medical Education. He previously served for ten years as the residency director for the Palmetto Health family medicine residency. Dr. Carter received his undergraduate and medical education in South Carolina. After completing a bachelor of science, cum laude, from Wofford College, Spartanburg, South Carolina, he earned a doctor of medicine from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He is a graduate of the Family Medicine Residency at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia, South Carolina, where he served as chief resident his final year. Dr. Carter served a medical editing and faculty development fellowship at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. Before his appointment to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Dr. Carter was employed as a faculty family physician with the Atlanta Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program, Morrow, Georgia, and as a clinical assistant professor at Mercer University School of Medicine, Macon, Georgia. During his fellowship he was a family physician with Unity Healthcare, Inc. in Washington, D.C., and a clinical instructor with Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. Dr. Carter is board certified in Family Medicine. He received the USC School of Medicine Distinguished Young Physician Alumni Award in 2008 and a Clinical Practice Teaching Award in 2012. His special interests are in migraine headache, obesity, congestive heart failure, evidence-based practice/information mastery, medical writing/editing, and graduate medical education.
