What drew you to the field of medicine?

Growing up with parents in the medical field, I witnessed both the challenges and rewards that come with their careers. I began shadowing physicians and nurses at my local hospital and volunteering in the emergency department, which solidified my desire to become a physician. I learned that medicine is not only about science and problem-solving, but also about the compassion required to care for fellow humans.

Additionally, I have lived most of my life in a county surrounded by medically underserved areas that particularly have a shortage of primary care physicians, geriatric physicians, and psychiatrists. I have seen how these shortages have affected family members’ and friends’ lives, inspiring me to pursue a career in medicine.

What are your future plans?

I am eager to be a part of the 2023 Accelerated Undergraduate to MD cohort! I am looking forward to engaging in research here at the University of South Carolina and the USC School of Medicine, and in the near future, I hope to volunteer on medical mission trips.

Although I have not chosen a specialty yet, I am committed to becoming a physician. I plan to make the most of this opportunity to learn more and explore all the specialties to accumulate the knowledge and skills needed to improve the lives of others during their most difficult times.
