Ask me about… Research, music, Greek Life, the best spots in Columbia to eat or explore, and STEM programs!

Hello! I am from Marietta, Georgia (or Atlanta as everyone from the metro area says). I am majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, with minors in Neuroscience and Music, with a music performance certificate. My interests span many areas, but some of the things I am involved in on campus include neuroscience research in the College of Arts and Sciences under Dr. Twiss, the orchestra groups on campus, and a social sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta. I also served on the Freshman Council for student government my freshman year, helping with academic programs and legislature. In the future, I am looking to do an MD/PhD program and go into neuroscience, with the idea of doing research or being a professor.

My advice for prospective students: Take a second to really reflect on yourself and what you want to get out of college! You really get out of it what you put into it, so setting some goals for yourself and your future (whether that’s a long-term or even just a semester-long goal) will really help you find a source of motivation and passion. Also, don’t be afraid to explore Columbia! There are so many yummy, affordable food options.

My advice for current students: Don’t be afraid to change your mind about what you want to do, even if you’re an upperclassman! One of the best parts of college is the array of opportunities available for education in all sorts of different areas. If you see a class outside of your major that you are interested in, take it!

My favorite thing about the Honors College: My favorite thing about the Honors College is my friends and the cool class options we get. Some of my best friends have come from my Honors community, and I know we are going to be in touch for the rest of our lives. The classes are also so cool! I am taking a really fun psychology class where I get to learn all about food and how our body processes it. Think smell, taste, pleasure, culture, eating disorders, the whole nine yards. That’s just one example of the plethora of options.

My reason for choosing the SCHC: One of the biggest pulls for me when it came to the SCHC was the environment; from the second I stepped on campus, I felt so welcomed and wanted by the University, which was so exciting! Coupled with the awesome class options and priority registration, the support network, and the financial aid opportunities I received from the University, there was no way I couldn’t choose the SCHC.

My favorite things: Fall, cute decorations, food, art, nature, hanging out with my close friends, making my friends smile!

My hobbies: Cooking and baking, hiking, planning travels, reading, playing the violin, painting and drawing.

My nickname and why: Em! Or Eggy, which was my mom’s childhood nickname for me.

Something that makes me laugh: Cat videos - I have a cat, and they always remind me of her.

Something I’m proud of: I’m proud of my research involvements and how much I have learned and grown while doing research!

Skill I’d like to master: Perfectly dicing veggies. Also making croissant dough. Pastry making in general!

Something new I’d like to learn: I would love to learn a new language, especially Mandarin Chinese or Japanese so I could travel to Asia!

Songs I’ve completely memorized: So many, being a music minor has its perks and downfalls.

Favorite study music: Chill music or bossa nova/light Jazz music. I really love the Cafe Music BGM channel.

Currently reading: Crazy Rich Asians and One of Us is Lying!

Favorite movie: There’s too many, but I love the Breakfast Club and any Marvel film.
