Special Education and Behavior Analysis

The demand for educators with expertise in teaching students with special needs has never been greater. The College of Education offers several programs geared to improving the impact you can have on your students... those with disabilities, those who are gifted and talented, and all learners in between.

Are you compassionate? Do you enjoy helping other people? Do the concepts of inclusivity and accessibility of education matter to you?

Whether you are seeking an undergraduate degree, someone changing careers or already a certified teacher, you can complete a Special Education degree. The Special Education programs at the University of South Carolina are designed for anyone who wishes to get involved with helping students with disabilities.

Become A Teacher

The following Special Education degrees can lead to teacher certification in South Carolina:

Programs include a bachelor of arts program, master’s degrees, and a Ph.D. program. You will be able to specialize in many different areas of special education including multi-categorical, severe and multiple, behavior analysis, leadership, and more.

If you are seeking to become a special education teacher and are not yet a certified teacher, you will be interested in the bachelor's or master's in Special Education. Current teachers looking to add special education certification complete the M.Ed. in Special Education. If you are interested in becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA®), you would pursue our M.Ed. in Applied Behavior Analysis.

Your Career

You will also have career options beyond the walls of a classroom. Other opportunities to have a positive impact on the lives of people with special needs abound, including physical and occupational therapy, assistive technology, counseling, special education leadership, and higher education research and teaching.

Of course, being a Special Education classroom teacher has its own rewards- the material reward having a specialized set of skills in an in-demand industry, as well as the emotional reward of making differences in the lives of people who might otherwise not have the same opportunities that many of us do.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
