Scholarships for the 2024-2025 Academic Year

The University of South Carolina's College of Education offers a variety of awards, scholarships, and fellowships. The College Student Affairs Committee or specific departments are responsible for selecting recipients. Scholarship and fellowship applications for new and continuing students will be evaluated in the Spring semester for award in the following Fall/Spring semesters. Typically, awards are split equally between the fall and spring semesters.

Scholarships for New and Continuing Graduate Students

Dr. Diane Monrad Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Graduate Student - To be awarded to a graduate student(s) in the College of Education.

Charles and Iva Marshall Graduate Fellowship   
Graduate Student - To be awarded to a graduate student in the College of Education who plans to teach in the State of South Carolina and who is in need of financial assistance. Preference is given to students from Lancaster County, SC.

Patterson Wardlaw Memorial Scholarship
Graduate Student – This award is provided to a graduate student(s) enrolled in the College of Education who has exemplified leadership, community service, and academic excellence in education.

Terry and Scott Peterson Fellowship
Graduate Student - This award is provided to a student(s) who does the most (through research, practice or service) to strengthen community and racial connections to increase K-12 educational opportunities by utilizing the arts, building school-community partnerships, expanding after school programs or other approaches.

Bryant A. and Jacqueline F. Meeks Scholarship
Doctoral Student - This award is provided to a full-time doctoral student(s) who is conducting research for their dissertation. Preference will be given to students who are conducting research on improving the quality of education for children who are frequently underserved by our education system.

James A. Stoddard Memorial Fellowship
Doctoral Student – This award is provided to a doctoral candidate(s) in the College of Education who is a certified secondary education teacher or whose research will impact secondary education. The applicant must be a resident of the State of South Carolina and have a demonstrated financial need, successful completion of the qualifying exam, evidence of sound moral and ethical character, and professional potential.

James B. Campbell-Charles H. Witten Fellowship
Graduate Student - For continuing students in the M.Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs. This award is provided to a qualified master’s degree candidate(s) in the higher education graduate program in the Department of Leadership, Learning Design, and Inquiry.

Dennis A. Pruitt Fellowship
Graduate Student - For continuing students in the M.Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs. This award is provided to a student(s) who are enrolled in the Higher Education Student Affairs Program; who is a member of the Student Personnel Association (SPA); grade point average of 3.5 or better; are active and engaged members of SPA; and demonstrate a commitment to serve undergraduate students and the entire campus through their work.

Grace and Charles Sloan Fellowship
Doctoral Student
- This award is provided to a student(s) pursuing doctoral study in Higher Education Administration as participants in the Community College Leadership Alliance (CCLA) program. The recipients of this fellowship shall be known as Grace and Charles Sloan CCLA Fellows.

Charles H. and Margaret M. Witten Fellowship
Doctoral Student - This award is provided to a worthy doctoral student in the Higher Education Administration program.

Frances Gibson Daniel Scholarship
M.A.T. Student in Special Education - This award is provided to one student who plans to work with children with emotional or behavioral disorders at the elementary school level. You must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 or better; financial need shall not be a factor in awarding the scholarship.

Nelle Taylor Scholarship in Special Education
This award is provided to a student enrolled in the Special Education Program in the Department of Educational and Developmental Science.

Mary L. Duffie Endowed Fellowship
This award is for a student pursing a degree within the Special Education Field.

The McClam Endowed Fellowship
This award is provided to a doctoral student pursing a degree in the Counselor Education Program.

Edens Hult Endowed Fellowship
This award is provided to an incoming graduate student(s) with outstanding research potential to pursue a doctoral degree in the Educational Psychology concentration of the Educational Psychology and Research Program in the Department of Educational and Developmental Science.

Dr. Paul Berg Graduate Fellowship
To provide a fellowship to a masters or doctoral student in Reading Education.

Harry & Kathryn Carter COE Literacy Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a degree with a literary focus.

Your application to the graduate school and program interview serve as your application for these M.A.T. Elementary scholarships. You are not required to complete the academicworks scholarship application linked above to be considered for these awards.

Harvey A. Allen Scholarship
This award will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student(s) pursuing initial teacher certification in Elementary Education.

Lavonne D. Roof Fellowship
This award is provided to a student(s) pursuing the Masters of Art in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree in Elementary Education.

Elisabeth P. Taylor Fellowship
This award is provided to a graduate student(s) who plans to teach science at the elementary school level.

Robert A. Weber Scholarship
This award is provided to a student(s) pursuing the Masters of Art in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree in Elementary Education.

Carrie Alicia Melton Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a student pursing a degree in secondary English education.

Hal and Mickey Anderson Scholarship
This award is provided to a student(s) pursuing the M.T. degree in Science Education.

Hettie Holland Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to pursue mathematics education in middle level or secondary education.

University High School/J. McTyeire Daniel/C.B. Harvey Fellowship
This award is provided to a student(s) pursuing a degree in Secondary Education (M.T.)

 

Scholarships for Continuing Elementary Education Undergraduate (BA) Students

If you are a current undergraduate Elementary Education major, consider applying for these scholarships. The deadline to apply for these scholarships is March 8, 2024.

Mary J. Heimberger Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is provided to support a student(s) pursuing a degree in Elementary Education.

Harvey A. Allen Scholarship
This award will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student(s) pursuing initial teacher certification in Elementary Education.

Melissa Baber Harvey Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Education
This scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education major who will be a Junior or Senior during the year of the award. The recipient should exhibit a passion for education and learning, exemplifying the qualities Ms. Harvey upheld.

 

Scholarships for Continuing Middle Level Students

If you are a current undergraduate Middle Level Education major, consider applying for these scholarships. The deadline to apply for these scholarships is March 8, 2024.

This scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to pursue mathematics education in middle level or secondary education.

For a student enrolled in the B.A. or B.S. in Middle Level Education who exhibits the qualities of an excellent teacher that Dr. Wilson worked so hard to instill in her student(s). The recipient(s) will have been admitted to the professional program in Middle Level Education and will demonstrate a commitment to teaching young adolescents, a desire to improve education at the middle level, and potential for leadership in the teaching profession. Special preference will be given to applicants who are completing an internship in a high-needs school.

 

Student Teaching Scholarships

The deadline to apply for these scholarships is March 8, 2024.

If you are currently enrolled in an initial teacher preparation program and will be doing your final student teaching/internship in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025, consider applying for these scholarships.

Peabody Scholarship
Undergraduate or Graduate Student -This award is provided to a Student Intern(s) or Student Teacher(s) in any Initial Teacher Licensure Program. Awards are issued for the actual semester in which the student(s) is completing student teaching/internship. Students must apply for the semester they anticipate completing Internship B, Internship II, or Directed (Student) Teaching.

 

AACTE Holmes Scholars Program for Underrepresented Doctoral Students

The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) Holmes Scholars Program supports doctoral students from historically underrepresented communities to pursue a career in education. USC Holmes Scholars are awarded $20,000 ($10,000 per semester) each year for up to 3 years for engaging in a 20 hrs/week graduate assistantship consisting of 10 hours in their affiliated department and 10 hours with the Office of Democracy, Education, and Inclusivity. The College of Education will also pay each Holmes Scholars’ tuition for the fall and spring academic semesters minus their participation fee.  Each department assumes the responsibility for the 17% “participation fee” on each Holmes Scholars’ fall and spring tuition bills required by the University as part of the new budget model.  Because each students’ tuition bill will depend on their credit hour enrollment, the participation fee cost will vary from student to student and from semester to semester.

The College of Education will provide $2,000 financial support to attend the AACTE Annual meetings and to attend one meeting of the Holmes Scholars Summer Policy Institute.

The AACTE Holmes Scholars Program does not follow the same application process as the others listed on this page.

Scholarship for New and Continuing Minority Students: Apple Core Initiative

The Apple Core Initiative seeks to recruit, enroll, and retain students from historically underrepresented populations into the teacher education programs at the University of South Carolina. Through special training, workshops, and field study experiences across the state, you will have the opportunity to explore diverse communities within the state as well as a unique opportunity to study abroad. The intended outcome of the program is to diversify the cadre of teacher candidates in the College of Education and subsequently the number of teachers of color in classrooms in the state of South Carolina.

Applying early is strongly recommended.

Requirements
In order to be eligible for acceptance to the Apple Core Initiative, you must:

  • Be fully accepted into USC’s main campus

  • Maintain the University’s 2.75 GPA guideline

  • Commit to four years to ensure degree completion

  • Complete a culminating project to fulfill the requirements for Graduation with Distinction (one of five categories)

Application Process

  • Two letters of recommendation:

    • One from your high school representative (on official letterhead)

    • One from a community member

  • A 500-word essay addressing this topic:

    • Considering your career choice as an educator, what would you consider the biggest obstacle facing education attainment in the state of South Carolina, your home state, or in the United States?

 

Noyce Scholarships for Secondary Science and Mathematics Education

The University of South Carolina's Noyce Scholarships help academically qualified students with financial need complete a bachelor's degree and Master of Teaching (MT) certification program. Faculty from the College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences are collaborating in an effort to increase the number of highly qualified science and mathematics teachers in South Carolina through a scholarship-based program (also known as USC-SMTI) that enables academically qualified students to complete a bachelor's degree in mathematics, science, or engineering and a one-year Master of Teaching (MT) certification program.

The Noyce Scholarships do not follow the same application process as the others listed on this page.

The application deadline for the Noyce Scholarships is April 5, 2024.

  • This scholarship funds juniors, seniors, and MT science and mathematics students.
  • If you qualify, you may be awarded up to $12,000 per year to complete a bachelor's degree and an MT degree program.
  • Besides your regular coursework, if you qualify you will participate in a special seminar program to help build and support your subject matter content knowledge and teaching skills.
  • You apply in the last semester of your sophomore, junior, or senior year-depending on how many years of scholarship money you need (1 to 3 years).
  • You must teach high school science or mathematics in a high-need school district for 2 years for each year of Noyce scholarship you receive.

CarolinaLIFE Scholarships

The CarolinaLIFE program offers scholarships for students in the program. The Bollinger Family Scholarship will be awarded to a student in the CarolinaLIFE program. The Croy West Endowed Scholarship is proudly given to memorialize Croy West who lived with autism and to assist other students to be a part of a college experience. The Frank and Frankie McGuire Endowed Scholarship is proudly given in honor of Frank McGuire, retired and winningest coach of UofSC Men’s Basketball, and his son Frankie, who was born with a disability and cerebral palsy, for a student enrolled in CarolinaLIFE. The CarolinaLIFE Fund Scholarship is proudly given to honor an excellent student currently enrolled in CarolinaLIFE.

Scholarships for New/Incoming Freshmen

The deadline to apply for these scholarships is March 15, 2024.

The College of Education has a limited number of scholarships for new freshmen that are renewable. Recipients receive these scholarships for up to 2 or 4 years provided they maintain a 3.0 GPA and continue making progress toward their intended education major. These scholarships are typically $500 per year.

Sharon and Phillip Arnold Education Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a degree in education.

George Poda, Jr., Memorial Scholarship
This award is provided to a student who intends to be a practicing educator. Preference will be given to former Teacher Cadets (High School) enrolled in the College of Education.

Sue Clark “Inspired By Education” Scholarship
This award is provided to an incoming freshman who is pursuing a degree in the Teacher Education Program. Preference is given to student(s) from Clarendon County. Second preference is to students based on financial need.

Lorin W. Anderson Award for First Generation College Students
This award is to provide financial support for first generation college students who aspire to become teachers. Up to four incoming freshmen will be selected. Each awardee will receive an award during his or her freshman year and during his or her sophomore year (provided the awardee meets the sophomore criteria).

Nancy and Paul Goldsmith Education Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a degree in education. Preference is given to students based on financial need.

Turybury Family Scholarship
This award is to provide financial support for a student from a rural area with demonstrated financial need who aspires to become a teacher; second, must maintain a 3.0 GPA; third, the student seeks to be involved on‐campus in extracurricular activities.

Dorothy H. Lavisky Scholarship
This award is provided to an undergraduate student who is pursuing a degree in Math or Science Education (middle level education). Preference is given to students based on financial need.

Duke Energy Foundation Scholarship in STEM
The Duke Energy Foundation Scholarship in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics is limited to a student majoring in middle level education with concentrations in mathematics or science.

Monty Macmillan Memorial Award
This award is provided to a student pursuing initial teacher certification to teach in an Elementary Education setting.

Conrad-Becton Scholarship
This award is provided to a student in Teacher Education and is pursuing a teaching degree in the College of Education.

Ham-Strohminger Memorial Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded by the University of South Carolina College of Education’s Scholarship Committee to an outstanding student with demonstrated financial need and who aspires to become a teacher.  This award will be made annually to one student, and the same student will have the opportunity to receive the awards for his or her freshman through senior years (four years total).

Cecil-Self Scholarship
This award is provided to a student pursuing initial teacher certification to teach in an Elementary Education setting.

Nelle Taylor Scholarship in Special Education
This award is provided to a student enrolled in the Special Education Program in the Department of Educational and Developmental Science.

Laura Muller Thomas Scholarship
This scholarship is provided to an incoming freshman whose county of resident is Fairfield County, SC and plans to pursue a degree in education from the College of Education.
