Biography
Dr. Steen has practiced as a board-certified family medicine physician in the Columbia area since 1991. She is originally from Kentucky where she received her medical degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in Lexington. She completed her Family Medicine residency at Palmetto Health Richland, where she served as chief resident. After practicing at Northeast Family Practice, she was recruited to return to her training program and teach at the Palmetto Health Richland/ University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, where she stayed for 13 years. During that time, she served in numerous administrative roles including medical student director, program director and vice chair. She provided full-service Family Medicine care with obstetrics, inpatient and outpatient care and was the first family physician to provide colonoscopy services in the inpatient setting at Palmetto Health Richland. She left the department in March 2015 and opened Prisma Health Family Medicine–Ballentine, which utilizes a patient centered care delivery design and emphasis on preventive care. This practice is co-located with Ballentine Family YMCA. In March 2020 with the onset of the pandemic, she returned to the department to serve as chair. She also currently serves on numerous organizational leadership committees and lead of the Primary Care Service Line for Prisma Health.
As a clinician and teacher, Dr. Steen has received more than 20 teaching awards and was recognized statewide with the Halford Award for Leadership in Humane Education. Her scholarly activity is centered around teaching excellence, quality, and clinical improvement topics. She continues to practice both outpatient and inpatient medicine, still serving patients that she delivered as babies and now are adults. She remains tied to her love of teaching and walking alongside families on their health care journeys. She is the proud mother of Casey and wife of Christian.
