Background

Dr. Kenneth W. Phelps joined the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Department of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science in 2010. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Phelps worked as a behaviorist in Outpatient Family Medicine, Inpatient Pediatrics and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Phelps works as a Medical Family Therapist, specializing in the systemic treatment of children, couples and families coping with a medical and/or mental health problem. He has a special interest in helping those living with chronic neurological and pain conditions. He is certified in the therapeutic modality of Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) through the Tourette Syndrome Behavior Therapy Institute (TS-BTI). Using this credential, he often sees patients with Tourette Syndrome and co-occurring disorders of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Other modalities used in practice include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and Brief Therapies. 

Dr. Phelps is a member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and a board member of the Childrens Trust of South Carolina. He has presented locally and nationally on the systemic implications of illness and disability. Dr. Phelps has been published in the Journal of Contemporary Family Therapy, Journal of Intellectual and Development Disabilities, Social Indicators Research, Academic Psychiatry and Families, Systems and Health. As an educator, he leads the outpatient child clinic rotation and didactics on relational, adolescent and group therapies. Beyond the Department of Neuropsychiatry, Dr. Phelps provides consultation in conflict resolution and the provision of feedback to multiple Prisma Health residency programs and clinical departments.
