Biography
Dr. Fernando Navarro joins the General Surgery Division of the Department of Surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in July of 2012.
Dr. Navarro received his MD degree in his native Colombia in 1996. From 1998-2001, he served as a Research Fellow in Tissue Engineering and Wound Healing at the Department of Surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.
In 2001, Dr. Navarro became a surgical intern at Boston University Medical Center and entered the General Surgery Residency Program at Maine Medical Center from 2002 to 2006. Following completion of his surgical residency he entered practice with Western Maine Surgery and held a clinical and academic appointment with the Maine Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Navarro has a parallel interest in epidemiology and in the development of public health policies. He completed a Masters in Public Health in 2009 at the University of Massachusetts.
Dr. Navarro comes to Columbia having just completed an intensive fellowship in all aspects of minimally invasive surgery at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Dr. Navarro is board certified in Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has authored several peer-reviewed publications in his field and continues being an active member of a number of professional organizations including SAGES, American Hernia Society and the Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Dr. Navarro's other special interests continue in wound healing and in surgical simulation. Dr. Navarro welcomes referrals for patients requiring all general surgical related procedures with particular emphasis on minimally invasive procedures.
