College of Arts and Sciences launches two high-impact projects
The College of Arts and Sciences is known for research and programming that not only
pushes the boundaries of scientific discovery, but also answers important questions
that help people lead better lives. That’s the goal of two recently-funded outreach
projects that truly exemplify the interdisciplinary nature of the college.
The Globe at UofSC: A National Partnership for the Arts
Robert Richmond, Department of Theatre and Dance
This project will serve as a symbol of innovation, promoting transformative teaching,
research, creative activities and community engagement in the arts. Situated on campus,
the Globe at UofSC will be a portable, outdoor theater that will provide students
and the community a unique experience to watch performances outdoors. After its monthlong
debut on campus during the 2020 Maymester, the theater will be housed in the National
Building Museum in Washington, D.C., as the centerpiece of their exhibition, and will
serve as the performance venue for the Folger Shakespeare Theatre’s production of
A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The portability of the Globe at UofSC will enhance cross-cultural
exchange and provide students with training experiences and connections to artists
worldwide.
Autism and Neurodevelopment Disorders Center
Jane Roberts, Department of Psychology and Jeff Twiss, Department of Biological Sciences
The new center will bolster the university’s expertise in autism and neurodevelopmental
disorders, making strategic faculty hires and encouraging multi-disciplinary research
projects that benefit patients, families and caregivers. The Autism and Neurodevelopment
Disorders Centerwill serve as a home for research with artificial intelligence, big
data and neuroimaging programs to provide the best possible outcome for the community
and patients and families dealing with neurodevelopment disorders.
The depth and breadth of these projects reflect extremely well on our faculty members
and their commitment to work that makes an appreciable difference in the world. These
projects from the College of Arts and Sciences promise to be transformative to the
University of South Carolina and beyond.
