Historical markers are great ways to explore a place—if, of course, you know the people, places, and events mentioned on them. Our new app ExploreSC combines an interactive map of over 4,000 historical markers throughout South Carolina with the reliable content of the digital South Carolina Encyclopedia to help explain and provide context for the information on our state's historical markers. ExploreSC provides students, educators, tourists, and residents with a historically-informed, interactive way to explore the Palmetto State!

About ExploreSC

Integrating with your device's mapping app, you'll be able to navigate to even the most off-the-beaten-path markers to discover the richness of historical sites in South Carolina--and you can curate a list of favorites to create your own personal library of South Carolina historical sites.

Tapping links on any marker's page within the app sends you to appropriate entries within the South Carolina Encyclopedia, providing users with reliable, approachable information about the people, places, and events that make up the state's rich story.

Photographs of markers and monuments record their placement within the state's landscape, creating opportunities for reflection, remembrance, and conversation if and when they go missing, are damaged, or are removed.
