2023 Student Awards

The Department of Exercise Science has selected seven students from among those nominated by faculty members, to receive the 2023 Outstanding Exercise Science Student Awards. This year’s winners were chosen for their academic achievements, community service and leadership roles.

Student Award About 
Peyton White Outstanding Student Award, B.S. in Exercise Science: Peyton White  A USC Merit Scholar, Peyton White worked her way up from operations assistant to manager at Campus Recreation while studying exercise science. She worked with a local school's PE department to encourage physical activity in young children. She also assisted in research at Prisma Health through the department's Athletic Training Program. This fall, she'll enroll in the M.S. in Athletic Training program. 
Parker Kinard Outstanding Student Achievement Award: Master of Public Health in Physical Activity and Public Health: Parker Kinard After graduating with a B.S. in Exercise Science, Parker Kinard decided to stay at the Arnold School to earn an MPH. During his two-year program, he served as a graduate research assistant with the Arnold Childhood Obesity Initiative and completed his practical experience requirement with a local nonprofit coalition that works to make South Carolina pedestrian/biking friendly.
Nestor Urrea Outstanding Student Achievement Award, Master of Science in Exercise Science Award: Nestor Urrea Originally from Colombia, Nestor Urrea came to the United States to earn his higher education degrees. With interests in sports performance and injury-prevention among high-level athletes, Urrea’s next steps include obtaining his doctoral degree. Long term, he would like to become the director of sport performance for a collegiate and/or professional team.
Toni Lee Outstanding Student Achievement Award, Master of Science in Athletic Training, Professional Program: Toni Lee Toni Lee was studying kinesiology at the University of Maryland when she shadowed an athletic trainer and knew she had found her passion. During her master's program, she worked with athletes at a local high school, USC Band & Dance, Baseball and Soccer. Lee also spent a summer with the Gwinett Stripers, returning to their affiliiate the Atlanta Braves as an intern this spring. She plans to continue working with baseball teams.
Corrine Carbone Outstanding Student Achievement Award, Master of Science in Advanced Athletic Training, Post-Professional Program: Corinne Carbone A graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Corinne Carbone worked at a high school in Massachusetts before coming to USC. During her master's program, she served as assistant athletic trainer at a local high school, volunteered with USC ROTC and researches services for ROTC programs. Carbone also led the sports medicine team for Claflin University. After graduation, she'll join the Palm Springs Power Baseball League. 
Erin Kishman Outstanding Student Achievement Award, Doctorate of Exercise Science: Erin Kishman Michigan native Erin Kishman came to the Arnold School to study the effects of exercise and sleep on health outcomes. Her research has evolved to focus on the 24-Hour Activity Cycle, which includes sleep, light physical activity, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and sedentary behavior. She will continue this work with a postdoctoral fellowship followed by a career in academia. 
Will Jones Outstanding Student Achievement Award, Doctor of Physical Therapy: Will Jones A high school football injury inspired Will Jones to pursue a career as a physical therapist. He came the Arnold School after studying exercise science at Carson-Newman University and began mentoring others to encourage them to join the profession. With several Midlands-based clinical experiences under his belt, Jones will wrap up his program with a final rotation in Montana before pursuing a position in acute care.
