Bryan, architect Jay White and University of South Carolina archivist Elizabeth West. When it was opened as the South Carolina College Library in 1840, it was the first freestanding academic library in the U.S. Today it is a premier research archive and special collections repository for the study of South Carolina and the American Southeast.
