Staff Spotlight: Dantz Woodberry

July 10, 2023 | Erin Bluvas, bluvase@sc.edu

Dantz Woodberry has been her entire career in academia. It began after the Marion, South Carolina native completed her bachelor’s degree in accounting at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg.

Her first position took her to Columbia, where she worked at Benedict College for 17 years. Initially hired as a budget analyst, Woodberry worked her way up to staff/senior accountant, manager of financial analysis and, finally, assistant director of student financial services.

I’ve gained a lot of knowledge from having the opportunity to interact with other Business Managers throughout the Arnold School as well as engage with other faculty throughout the university, who are nothing short of amazing people.

Looking for a change but loving the higher education environment, she made her move to the Arnold School in 2017. As the business manager for the USC Prevention Research Center, Woodberry handled facility/office management, payroll/human resources transactions, and procurement activities/travel. She also assisted with grant proposals, managed pre- and post-award activities, and monitored/prepared financial reports for existing projects.

After five years with the center, Woodberry saw an opening in the Department of Health Services Policy and Management (HSPM). As business manager, she manages the department budget, processes payroll/human resources actions, plans special events (e.g., the annual James E. Clyburn Health Equity Lecture) and supports HSPM chair Brad Wright.

"Dantz is a priceless member of our team, who is incredibly talented and readily draws on her wealth of experience to help the department run smoothly," Wright says. "From the day she started with us, she has also worked closely with me to find ways to continually make our processes more equitable and efficient. She is exceptionally driven — often the first person to arrive in the office each day and the last to leave — and she does all of this with a sunny disposition that enhances departmental culture. In the year she’s been with us, I’ve received numerous emails from faculty singing her praises, and I share their sentiments wholeheartedly.”

Along the way, Woodberry completed USC’s GRANT Certificate Program and a Master of Business Administration from Southern Wesleyan University. She’s also amassed a vast amount of professional experience as well as friendships.

The chair, staff, faculty and students are great individuals who are caring, dedicated and passionate about the work they do.”

The Staff Spotlight Series is sponsored by the Arnold School's Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
