The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association brought together scholars in the field of communication sciences and disorders (COMD) for their 2017 convention held in Los Angeles last month. The Arnold School’s COMD department maintained its significant presence with 20 presentations on topics such as literacy, hearing loss and aphasia by students and faculty.
As one of the largest national events for exchanging scholarship and providing professional education for speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists, the ASHA convention attracts more than 15,000 attendees annually. The first ASHA convention was held in 1936, and its important role within the field of COMD has only grown since then.
“This convention attracts researchers and practitioners from around the world. Scientists from top-tier national and international universities attend to present new research findings,” says Arnold School COMD chair Kenn Apel. “COMD was proud to have so many of its strong faculty and students sharing their own new research findings with research and clinical scientists from around the globe. Our extensive presence demonstrated the strong commitment our department has to research.”
This international convention is known for bringing both researchers and clinicians together to learn about new research findings as well as how those findings can be translated into clinical practice. COMD was a significant contributor to those discussions of research findings and clinical translation. The large number of faculty and students who presented is a testament of the department’s commitment to research and developing the next generation of clinical scientists.
During this time period, COMD faculty members also presented at other scientific societies’ conferences. These events include the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Aphasia, the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Neurobiology of Language 2017, Aging and Speech Communication: An International and Interdisciplinary Research Conference, and the Annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.
