Elizabeth Patterson Papers

The collection documents Patterson's service in the South Carolina Senate (Spartanburg County area), 1979-1986, and the U.S. House of Representatives, Fourth District, 1987-1993.

 SCPC also holds the papers of her father, South Carolina Governor and U.S. Senator Olin D. Johnston, as well as an oral history interview with Patterson's sister, Sallie Scott.

Collection Finding Aid

Nineteen feet of material, chiefly 1979 to 1992, provides valuable information about Patterson’s public service in South Carolina and Washington, D.C.  Public papers primarily document Patterson’s service in the General Assembly and Congress.  Personal papers, which make up the bulk of the collection, include material on her campaigns for office, family, civic involvement, and education.

Patterson sat for an interview on July 13, 1995, and discussed her father's career and her early life in Washington, D.C.

Sallie Scott is the elder daughter of Olin D. and Gladys Atkinson Johnston. In this 1995 interview, she recalls life in the Governor’s Mansion and in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., her father’s political campaigns, and her mother’s active role in Johnston’s political career.
