University Libraries Research and Educational Data Procurement Program

University Libraries is pleased to invite USC Columbia-affiliated researchers and instructors to apply to a Research Dataset Procurement program that will provide library-hosted access to data needed for research or teaching.

This program aims to fund small requests ($1,000 - $5,000) for existing data to be used in research or teaching. The total number of funded proposals will reflect the number of qualified applications received and the potential that requested datasets have to positively impact research or teaching at the University of South Carolina.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Data that are restricted to a single researcher or instructor, department, school, or college within the university are not eligible. Licensing must allow for campus-wide access, which will be managed by University Libraries. Sensitive data are not eligible for this program.

  • Preference will be given to applications that demonstrate possible use cases beyond the researcher or instructor making the request. Applicants are encouraged to consider the potential value of data to others by identifying other researchers, centers, departments, schools, or courses that have an interest in the data. Collaborative proposals across units are welcome.
  • If access is limited to licensing (option to purchase is not available), University Libraries will license the data for one year with the aim to continue funding after that time. However, it cannot be guaranteed.
  • Participation in this program is not limited to faculty. Graduate student and staff researchers are also encouraged to apply.

Dataset Purchase Timeline

Applications are due March 31, 2024 with purchase/license happening before June 30, 2024, depending on availability and researcher needs.

Acknowledgement of Support

Publications resulting from the use of data purchased through this program must contain the following acknowledgement: “The author wishes to acknowledge the University of South Carolina Libraries, which provided funding for the data used in this research.”

Apply online by March 31, 2024.
