Academic Advising

New Advisor Series

New academic advisors are highly encouraged to complete the New Advisor Series of in-person trainings within their first year of advising at USC. Each training will be offered at least one time per year.

Advising Workflow & Appointment Notes

This session provides best practice strategies on how to strategically and efficiently build advising appointment workflow and provide guidelines for entering appointment notes.  New UAAs will receive this training during the onboarding process.

Advising Technology Overview

This session provides an introduction and overview of the four main technology systems used in advising: EAB Navigate, DegreeWorks, Self Service Carolina, and the My USC Experience record. New UAAs will receive this training during the onboarding process.

Interventions & Referrals

This session provides best practice strategies and guidelines for providing student interventions, making referrals to campus partners, and appropriate follow-up with students.  New UAAs will receive this training during the onboarding process.

Financial Considerations of Academic Decisions

This session brings representatives from the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships and the Office of the Bursar together to discuss common academic decisions such as adding/dropping courses, changing majors, withdrawing from the University, etc. and the resulting financial consequences. Advisors will gain an understanding of how to foster student awareness of financial consequences and make appropriate referrals.

My USC Experience

This session provides information about the My USC Experience initiative and the online system that collects and reports records of student involvement in experiential and engaged learnings. Advisors will learn how to incorporate it into advising conversations as it provides a more holistic view of a student’s college experience.

Appreciative Advising Workshop

This session provides an overview of Appreciative Advising based on the book titled, The Appreciative Advising Revolution. The six phases of Appreciative Advising – Disarm, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver, and Don't Settle – will be defined and participants will learn and practice implementing each phase into their advising practice.
