Academic Advising

Readmission Outreach

Academic advisors reach out to students who have missed a major semester (fall or spring) and encourage reenrollment in the coming term.

Intended Outcomes

The intended outcome of this initiative is to contact previous students who may wish to re-enroll at the University and help them navigate barriers to re-enrollment and streamline potential advisement for readmit students who are often challenged by the re-enrollment process.

Timeline for Intervention

Fall - Mid September

Spring - Mid April

Intervention Process

  1. Advisors and/or department contacts will receive a list of students for whom they were the last assigned advisor and who have been identified as those who may be seeking readmission to the university after taking a major semester off.
  2. Advisors will conduct outreach to these students using EAB text messaging and phone calls to personally support students in re-enrolling, if that is their goal.
  3. Advisors will support students in advisement once they’re readmitted.
  4. Advisors will document outreach in EAB Navigate.

Communication

  1. Text messaging should be the first communication attempt for reaching out to these students, as it is unlikely that they will be checking their  email addresses. See below for a sample text messaging script.
  2. Advisors should then follow up with a phone call 2-3 days after the first text message if they have not connected with the student. See below for a sample phone call script.
  3. If, after texting and calling once, you still have not gotten a response from the student, please send 2 additional text contact attempts over the course of 7-10 days.

Sample of the first text message to students:

Hello! If you are planning on reapplying to  for (semester), please reach out and let me know what I can do to help. Best, (your name).

Hello, is this (student name)? Hi (student), this is (your name) at the University of South Carolina. I worked with you as your academic advisor when you last attended  or I am an academic advisor in the (college/department)I wanted to reach out and see if you were planning on reapplying to the University of South Carolina for this coming semester.

Student answers no – ok, thanks for letting me know! Have a great day!

Student answers yes, they have already reapplied –

  • Determine if they have reapplied for admission to the same college/major that were last enrolled in.
  • If so, let them know they can reach back out to you when they know that they have been readmitted, and you can help connect them to someone in the college who will advise them for classes.
  • If not, let them know someone from the college they’re admitted to will connect with them about advisement if they are admitted.
  • Remind them that they will need to submit official transcripts for any work completed while away from .
  • Remind them to visit the financial aid website or contact financial aid with any questions about paying for school. If they have any questions about financial aid in that moment, please create an alert to Financial Aid in EAB.

Student answers yes, they’re planning on reapplying –

  • Guide them to the admissions webpage for returning students (sc.edu/admissions, click “Requirements”, click “Returning Students”) (send in a follow-up email)
  • They can find all requirements there, including information on what to do if they have taken classes at another school in the time they’ve been away from .
  • Let them know the deadline to reapply is July 1, but earlier is better! The deadline to submit official transcripts and other documents is August 1.
  • Remind them to visit the financial aid website or contact financial aid with any questions about paying for school. If they have any questions about financial aid in that moment, please create an alert to Financial Aid in EAB.

Wrap up conversation with any questions the student might have. Please let us know if unique questions arise so we can pass that information to others who might get similar questions.
