Secondary Education

We can all recall an inspirational high school teacher. A graduate degree in secondary education can be your path toward becoming an inspiration to others.

Graduate Degrees

The College of Education offers two pathways for initial teacher certification in secondary education. The accelerated degree option that leads to the Master of Teaching degree allows students to complete both a bachelor's and master's in as few as five years. Students will complete an undergraduate degree in the secondary subject area they wish to teach, while completing 12-15 hours of education courses. After finishing the bachelor’s degree, students complete the one-year Master of Teaching (M.T.) degree which includes internships and student teaching.

The College coordinates with other UofSC college partner programs to offer the Master of Art in Teaching degrees for career changers and other prospective graduate students who currently hold a bachelor's degree in something other than education and now want to pursue a career as a high school teacher. This is also a fantastic route for a college senior who has just now decided on a teaching career. On average, students complete this program in two years.

This accelerated degree program, knows as the 5th-year program, is for students who would like to become high school teachers in English, mathematics, science or social studies. This program allows students to complete both a bachelor's and master's degree in as few as five years. Students will complete an undergraduate degree in the secondary subject area they wish to teach, while completing 12-15 hours of education courses. After finishing the bachelor’s degree, students complete a one-year Master of Teaching (M.T.) degree which includes internships and student teaching.
