For classified state titles, each class title is assigned a class specification, which represents the official description for the position. The class specification includes examples of the kind of work and level of responsibility normally assigned to a position that may be allocated to a specific class.
This information can prove to be very helpful, and should be used as a guideline when developing a position description for the duties and responsibilities of a single job.
If you are unsure which class title to select, first review the Higher Education State Job Classifications provided by the S.C. Department of Administration. On the site, you will be prompted to select a job classification from a dropdown menu (noted by letters A through L), and then you will choose a job category (specified by double letters such as AA, AB, and so on).
Example: Below, the job classification (Administrative), is followed by three job categories (Administrative Services, Postal Services and Supply, Property & Procurement).
(A) Administrative
(AA) Administrative Services
(AB) Postal Services
(AC) Supply, Property & Procurement
After making your selection, you are then prompted to select a job title, which includes the assigned class specification details and assigned pay band.
Example: By selecting the job classification “Administrative” and the job category “Postal Services,” you are provided a selection of four job titles:
AB10 – Postal Specialist
AB20 – Postal Courier
AB30 – Postal Center Director I
AB40 – Postal Center Director II
When you select the appropriate job title for your position, you will be presented with the following information:
- General Nature of Work
- Examples of Work
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Minimum Requirements
- Pay Band/Salary Range
- Federal EEO Category
