Information for Incoming Freshmen

Welcome to the South Carolina Honors College! We have lots of activities and opportunities to ensure that you have a great first year experience here.

Honors Orientation and Advising

As an Honors College student, you have priority registration for fall courses over other incoming freshmen, and you'll participate in a special Honors orientation session during your regular orientation on campus. Your Honors College advising and course registration is conducted by phone for incoming freshmen in early summer. Find out more.

Peer Mentoring

The Honors Peer Mentorship Program provides peer-led guidance and support for incoming Honors students as they navigate life at the University of South Carolina. Participating in this program is voluntary and if you choose to do so, you will be assigned to a mentorship group led by an upper-level Honors student. The first-year transition to college is a big step; with a SCHC Peer Mentor, you will make important social and academic connections that ease the adjustment to college life.

Next Steps? Fill out the Mentee Application/ Participation Agreement. Freshmen will be notified by August 10th with their mentor contact information. Any questions, contact us at

Freshman Flotilla

**NOTE: Flotilla 2020 has been moved to April 2021.**
Freshman Flotilla
is a time-honored tradition for the Honors College and our incoming freshmen! We're excited to celebrate seven years of floating down the Congaree River for a morning or afternoon of fun and relaxation.

Flotilla is an opportunity to meet and get to know each other and also learn more about the Columbia area, the river and the city. Students who participate in Flotilla sign up for a morning or afternoon trip to kayak down the Congaree River. Transportation is provided by the Honors College. Learn more here.

Honors Convocation

Our Honors Convocation program officially welcomes you to the Honors College family and is only for Honors College students. You will hear from current students, meet our staff and others who teach honors courses and have a chance to spend time with your peers. Learn more here.

Accelerated undergraduate/M.D. program

The Honors College and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine offer an accelerated and combined 7-year (3+4) program that results in the undergraduate degree from UofSC and the medical degree from the UofSC School of Medicine in Columbia. This fast track degree program is called the BARSC-MD, which represents the two degrees it awards. Find more information about the application process here.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
