Information for Incoming Freshmen

Welcome to the South Carolina Honors College! We have lots of activities and opportunities to ensure that you have a great first year experience here.

Incoming Freshman Advising

One of the many benefits of being a student in the Honors College is priority registration — this means you get the opportunity to register for your fall classes before other incoming freshmen students. To take advantage of this benefit, you will meet virtually with your Honors advisor in early summer, prior to the start of UofSC’s New Student Orientation. During this virtual meeting, you will be advised and enrolled in your fall classes, both Honors and non-Honors. Students will receive information about this appointment in early May — so check your emails! Find out more.

Honors Orientation

Honors Orientation is designed to help you put together everything you’ve learned so far about joining the Gamecock and Honors communities this fall. Honors Orientation takes place on Day 2 of your UofSC New Student Orientation session, so start by registering.  At the Honors College session, you will hear from Honors upperclassmen, find out more about the Honors experience and learn how to get involved within the Honors community.  Find out more.

Honors Peer Mentor Program

The Honors Peer Mentor Program is an easy way for incoming Honors College students to meet other Honors freshmen, explore the abundant resources UofSC has to offer and transition into a vibrant and well-rounded university life, all with the guidance and friendship of experienced upperclassmen. New students (mentees) are matched with upperclassmen (mentors) the summer before their first year so they have a contact made before move-in day!

Next Steps? Fill out the Mentee Application/ Participation Agreement. Peer mentee applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, and assignments will be made continuously throughout the summer. If you have any questions, please email Cami Reid

Freshman Flotilla

Freshman Flotilla is a time-honored tradition for the Honors College and our incoming freshmen! We're excited to celebrate another year of floating down the Congaree River for a morning or afternoon of fun and relaxation.

Flotilla is an opportunity to meet and get to know each other and also learn more about the Columbia area, the river and the city.  Students who participate in Flotilla sign up for a morning or afternoon trip to kayak down the Congaree River. Transportation is provided by the Honors College. Learn more here

Honors Convocation

Honors Convocation is your official welcome to the Honors College family. Join us for your chance to hear from current students about the Honors College life, talk to our talented staff and faculty, and meet your fellow Honors College freshmen. Learn more!

Accelerated undergraduate/M.D. program

The Honors College and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine offer an accelerated and combined 7-year (3+4) program that results in the undergraduate degree from UofSC and the medical degree from the UofSC School of Medicine in Columbia. This fast track degree program is called the BARSC-MD, which represents the two degrees it awards. Find more information about the application process here.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
