Honors students may enroll in SCHC 497, the Honors independent research course, which counts as a Beyond the Classroom requirement or an Honors elective. If a student is pursuing graduation with leadership distinction, SCHC 497 is also an approved GLD course for the research pathway. Specifically, a student will work on a research project under the supervision of a faculty member. This research could be a part of, or an extension of, a faculty member’s ongoing research or it could consist of a separate project developed by the student with the faculty member providing supervision and mentorship.
This is a three credit course that is offered each semester. Some students may wish to enroll in SCHC 497 because their major does not offer a departmental independent research course.
Students wishing to enroll in SCHC 497 must complete the SCHC independent research course contract and submit the contract through the online application below. The course contract is based on a written agreement between the student and professor and must be approved by the Honors College. The contract includes a research summary, list of objectives and the instructor’s signature. At the end of the semester in which the student is enrolled, the instructor will assign the student’s grade.
Submission of an SCHC 497 application must be made prior to the last date to add a course according to the university calendar and must be made in consultation with the student’s Honors College advisor and professor overseeing the independent research.
Independent Research Course Contract Submission
To submit a research course contract application, a student should first connect with the Honors advisor about pursuing independent research. The student should also meet with the professor who will oversee the research project. The faculty member and the student must complete the SCHC independent research course contract.
Once the contract is completed, the student will then upload the document and fill out the information below to complete the submission.
