Class Registration Instructions

If You Already Know Your Schedule...

1. Log in to my.sc.edu. 

Follow this path of links: Student > Registration > Browse Classes > The term you're registering for > USC Columbia. 

2. Select your subject and course number.

For example, ENGL 101.

Course Abbreviations

You can type the four-letter course abbreviation instead of scrolling through the course list. For example, "English" = "ENGL." 

3. View Sections for your course. 

Restricted Sections

Some sections may be restricted. To see restrictions for a specific course, click the course name. Restrictions will be an option to select in the window that opens. 

If a course section begins with a letter, it is intended for a specific population of students:

  • Section A## or S##: Residential Learning Initiatives
  • Section C##: Capstone Scholars
  • Section H##: Honors
  • Section J## or N##: Online Course/Distributed Learning
  • Section M##: PMBA
  • Section P##: Palmetto College
  • Section R##: Regional Grad Program
  • Section T##: TRIO/Opportunity Scholars Program
  • Section Y##: Evening Programs and Weekend Courses
  • Section Z##: Fort Jackson Location 

4. Look for days and times that fit your schedule. 

Acronyms
  • Cap = Capacity, the number of possible seats in the course
  • Act = Actual, the number of students already enrolled in the course
  • Rem = Remaining, the number of seats currently available
  • C (on far left of the screen) = Course is closed

5. Register for your chosen section. 

Select the section you want to register for, then scroll to the bottom of the screen and click register. If no errors pop up, congratulations! You are registered for that course.

6. Repeat.

Repeat, starting with finding your subject and course number, to sign up for the rest of the courses you're taking this semester.

7. View your schedule for the upcoming semester.

Congrats! You are registered for classes. Return to the registration menu and click "Concise Student Schedule" to view your courses for the upcoming semester.


 

If You Need Help Making Your Schedule...

1. Log in to my.sc.edu. 

Follow this path of links: Student > Registration > Schedule Planner Shopping Cart. Select USC Columbia and click "Save and Continue." 

2. Select your subject and course number. 

Click on "Add Course" to find and add your subject and course. For example, ENGL 101. You will see the course on the left side of the screen under "Courses." Repeat for all courses you're taking this semester. Then click "Done."

Adding Breaks to Your Schedule

If you need to schedule around your assistantship or other work schedule, you can add a break to your schedule. Don't schedule breaks for lunch or to avoid morning classes. The more break time you add, the more restrictive your schedule will be.

4. Deselect the courses you're unable to register for.

Select the "Options" button to deselect courses. Course sections beginning with a letter are intended for specific populations of students.

If a course section begins with a letter, it is intended for a specific population of students:

  • Section H##: Honors
  • Section J## or N##: Online Course/Distributed Learning

4. Click on "Generate Schedules"

Look at the available schedules and select the one you like.

Hovering over the magnifying glass will show a pop-out of the schedule. Click "View" to see all details for a particular schedule. 

See More Course Information

Click the blue "i" for details about an individual course.

Lock in a course. 

Click on the lock icon if you want to lock a course into your schedule draft that Schedule Planner creates. This will not reserve your seat in that course.

Work quickly!

If you linger too long over choosing a schedule, you may lose your seat. Your seat is not reserved until you complete registration.

5. Send your chosen schedule to the shopping cart.

Once you find the schedule you like, click "Send to Shopping Cart" then "OK" then "Register." 

6. View your schedule for the upcoming semester.

Congrats! You are registered for classes. Return to the registration menu and click "Concise Student Schedule" to view your courses for the upcoming semester.
