Summer School on Mathematical Foundation of Data Science

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): Summer School on Mathematical Foundation of Data Science is supported by the NSF RTG grant at the University of South Carolina. It will be combined in-person (at the Department of Mathematics of the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC) and virtual, and will run from June 3 to July 12, 2024.

We plan to accept about 20 undergraduate students for this program. The students who are US citizens or permanent residents are eligible to receive a stipend of up to $3,500 for in-person participation or up to $2,000 for virtual participation by the last day of the program.

The deadline for applications has been extended to May 17th , 2024. Please, apply early and arrange to have a faculty member email a letter of support to REU@math.sc.edu. The applicants will receive an e-mail notification on whether they have been accepted to the program by May 20th, 2024.

Program Outline:   During the first week of the program, a list of projects will be presented to students along with necessary background knowledge in the Mathematical Foundation of Data Science. Then, students will be divided into several groups to work on research projects. Some guest speakers have been invited to give talks on the latest development in the Mathematical Foundation of Data Science. On the last day of the program, students will present their research findings.
