Notes:
Central and Eastern Europe has gone through a period of spectacular changes after 1945. The region experienced totalitarianism, authoritarianism, reform, revolutions, transformation and democratization. Each historical phase shaped the character of democracy in the region in the 21st Century. Poland, the largest country in the region, is a key to understanding the entire region. This course will explore the processes of continuity and change as Central and Eastern Europe made their way "back to Europe" after WWII.This course will be taught by Dr. Bohdan Szklarski, a professor of political science in Warsaw, Poland. Szklarski has worked, studied, lived and researched in the U.S. for many years and is a visiting professor at the University of South Carolina during the 2019-2020 academic year.
